    Hydroxychloroquine and prednisone in pregnancy

My rheumie says that although it has been proven safe, once he finds out that I'm pregnant he's going to take me off of it. Corticosteroids (such as prednisone) are generally considered safe for use during pregnancy because they do not reach the fetus in an active form.2 Cytotoxic medications such as methotrexate are stopped during pregnancy. Also one thing you have to remember is Plaquenil takes so long to enter your body to help symptoms that it will pry take just as long to leave your system so either way your body is still going to have it in it's system why go off of it throw your body off course then try to take it again, it's like starting from fresh to get your symptoms under control. Andrea I just copied this from ***** Immunosuppressant medications, which may be prescribed for severe lupus, can cause birth defects.

Today, Plaquenil and other antimalarials are also used to treat and help prevent symptoms caused by certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA, systemic lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus, even though these diseases are not caused by malaria parasites. Nov 25, 2019 Usual Adult Dose for Malaria Prophylaxis. Suppression 400 mg 310 mg base orally on the same day every week Comments-Suppressive therapy should begin 2 weeks prior to exposure; however, failing this, an initial dose of 800 mg 620 mg base may be taken in 2 divided doses 6 hours apart. Not sure about the first med you listed, but I took prednisone throughout my last pregnancy for rheumatoid arthritis and had a healthy baby girl, myrheumatologist took me off my other meds, his belief was for me to take as little medication and still remain comfortable, although studies had shown no defects to the baby while on the other medications, he didnt want me to take the risk

I have never taken plaquenil as I have a seizure disorder as well, however, I do know that my Rheumy told me that the only safe drug to take during pregnancy is prednisone. Most certainly I wouldn't be on it if I were to have a child. Thankfully some have had successful births on prednisone but that is a strong medication just like pain medication it can harm a baby..

Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is often needed to manage disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus SLE during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to examine lupus activity and pregnancy outcomes in women with SLE treated or not treated with HCQ during pregnancy. Objective. To investigate the effect of hydroxychloroquine HCQ in pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE. Methods. In SLE pregnancies of a single Dutch center 2000–2015, lupus activity and flares before and during pregnancy and postpartum were assessed using the SLE Disease Activity Index SLEDAI/SLEPDAI SLEDAI adjusted for pregnancy. Comparing prednisone dosage change, we noted a decrease in the HCQ and an increase in the PL group. Delivery age and Apgar scores were higher in the HCQ group.
